There are many different types of nurses and they are in very high demand both worldwide and throughout the United States. Although many factors contribute to the current shortage of nurses, the bottom line is that nurses are very much needed in hospitals and various healthcare facilities. This call for qualified healthcare professionals is thankfully not going unheeded. The unfortunate lack of nurses is proving a fortunate circumstance for many people interested in pursuing a career in the nursing field who can’t afford the necessary educational expenses. Once a prospective student has decided what kind of nurse they would like to become, they can take advantage of many grants and scholarships that will help them fund their education. A simple search over the internet for ‘nursing grants’ will produce a plethora of results to sift through.

There are many grants available from different sectors to be considered. There are also low interest loans to peruse if the applicant does not qualify for some of the grants available. Grant amounts vary from program to program, but a lot of them will cover the student’s entire tuition plus room and board in addition to other fees associated with being enrolled in a nursing program. Besides differing in amounts, grants also differ in the eligibility requirements. Prospective nurses should not waste their time in applying for grants in cases where they do not meet the eligibility standards. Instead, they should apply for the opportunities that they actually stand a chance at being considered for. This will save them time and energy along with sparing the grantor. Some of the eligibility requirements for grants can be based on residency, income, and the chosen focus of nursing. A person living in New York should not apply for a grant that is specified for New Mexico residents.

There are plenty of grants offered by both the federal and local government, so it would behoove the potential grantee to take their time when searching for and applying for nursing grants. For someone looking to receive a quality nursing education, a grant can be a foot in the door and a step in the right direction. The added relief of having that much less of a student loan to look forward to paying back makes considering a grant well worth the time and patience it takes to find and apply for the right grants.

A career as a Certified Nursing Assistant can be very rewarding and CNA’s are is in high demand. Here are a few tips and pointers if you are working on your CNA certification.

The first thing that you want to do is find a school that offers CNA training. Many nursing schools, community colleges and vocational schools offer different CNA programs. Most states require anywhere from 75 to 100 hours of training. The hours required in each part varied by state and is set by the state boards of nursing.

All the CNA programs are separated in two halves. There is the class portion, which can sometimes be done online, and a clinical part where you spend certain hours practicing under direct supervision of a nurse. With both the written and clinical part it is really important to accurately log your hours and to make sure that your supervising nurse checks off your skills as you complete them.

Once you have completed the required training hours it is time to take your state certified test. This, as well, is done in two parts. There is a written test and a practical test where you are required to demonstrate one of the skills learned.

The written portion of the test is not too hard. The questions come straight from handbook and if you have been doing well in class and you understand the material there will be no surprises on the final test. This is probably one of the easiest portions of the certification, other than the nervousness involved.

The practical portion of test is a little more difficult because it requires you to follow the steps exactly as they were taught. You will be given a packet or handbook that gives every skill and step by step instructions on how to do it. If you follow this to the letter you won’t have any trouble.

There are a few things on the practical part of the test that, if missed, is an automatic fail. These all relate to the core safety concerns for yourself and your patient. The first, and most important, is washing your hands appropriately. Follow the instructions to the letter and do it EVERY time before and after patient contact. The other easily missed portion of a skill is using protective equipment like gloves.

Getting your CNA certification is worth the training and is a rewarding career.

Am I qualified?

If you want to be a nursing assistant, it is important that you have the passion when it comes to helping people. More often than not, new CNAs become so overwhelmed with the number of tasks at hand thus resulting to dismay and frustration. Being a CNA can be a very daunting job. But if you really have the heart and the desire to do this, you would find it very rewarding after a long tiring day. This is definitely not the career for you if you just want to be a CNA for the sake of paying your bills.

How can I be a Certified Nurse Assistant?

The requirements actually vary from one state to another. You have to check with your local state about the time needed for your training, the different kinds of tests, and let them know about the environment that you want to work in. If you want to know the specific details, you can always visit contact the State Nurse Aide Registry or the State Licensing Board as well. You may also visit the website of the Directory of Nursing Agencies so you will know about the CNA classes and other training programs that you should complete.

But the mentioned names are not the only agencies that you should go to. There are other more places to ask about the requirements such as Home Health Aides, Patient Care Technicians, and many others. Once you got a job at the healthcare facility of your choice, you should submit yourself drug tests and even a background check as well.

If you have the proper training, it would be very easy for you to land a job as a CNA. There are also some nursing homes that gives you free training or would pay you while you train with them. Usually, it is offered to those who are willing to train fulltime for about six weeks. You also have more alternatives as well which includes a training with the Red Cross or with your local community college. Prepare at least $300 up to $600 and these trainings usually last for 6 months. Although this would take longer, you will get more experience and become more confident in doing your job. Do not forget to take the necessary tests to certify that you are already qualified to be a nurse assistant.

The written test is easier compared to the clinical tests. According to the CNA reports, many flunk their clinical tests because of nervousness. Since you will be required to perform some of the safety measures, you must always remember all the things that learned from your training. Little things such as knocking the door before you open, introducing yourself to the patient, and carefully raising the bed rails are just some of the basic nursing etiquettes that count.

Which is the best place for me to work?

If you can’t decide about the good place to apply your CNA training, you can always check out some of the websites catered specially for nursing-related jobs. From there, you will know about the facilities that they have and how they were graded for the past few inspections. It is important that you screen and compare the nursing facilities first before you apply. Surely, you know friends or family members who are working as CNAs as well. There are also thousands of Home Care Agencies that you can talk to. Listen to their orientation and the services provided by the nursing facility of your choice.

Big demand for CNAs

Not everybody can work as a nursing assistant. That is why so many care facilities are having a hard time getting and retaining staff that are really qualified to do the job. This is the main reason why there is a shortage of CNAs in United States alone. Moreover, with all the tasks and stressful job, the pay scale is not as big as you think. However, because there are more and more elders who need the care of CNAs, there are more and more opportunities that are open for nursing assistants today.

So when you are already a CNA, be proud that you have this kind of job. You may not wear coats, ties, and other formal blacks and whites but you are still considered as a professional who is vital to the health care industry.

Certified nursing assistants apply direct care to patients in hospitals, nursing homes, doctor’s offices, home care, clinics and mental health facilities. Certified nursing assistants are, also, known as nursing aides, nursing assistants, home health aides, patient care technicians, and orderlies. Working under the direction of a Registered Nurse, or Licensed Practical Nurse, they are responsible for basic patient care such as bathing, dressing, making beds, light housekeeping, assist the nurse, feed patients, take vital signs, basic treatments, give emotional and social support and provide vital information about patient’s condition to the nurse in charge.

CNA Training

Certified nursing training will help a person get ready to be able to work and care for patients of all ages in a very short period of time. You will need a high school diploma or a GED, before you can register for a nursing assistant’s course. There will, also, be a background check (criminal) and drug tests as you get prepared for your new career as a CNA. Training can possibly be provided by the nursing home you work for, online training, in college, or by the Red Cross. Before you begin your training, be sure you contract the State Nurse Aide Registry and/or State Licensing Board to find out if you meet the requirements for nursing assistants.

Classroom instructions generally lasts between 6 to 12 weeks and include courses such as basic nursing skills, anatomy and physiology, and nutrition, patient care, basic nursing skills and clinical science skills, and infection control. Students get plenty of hands on experience during clinical activities like learning CPR, taking vital signs and so on.

CNA Certification

Certification will vary from state-to-state and you will need one depending upon where you will live. Certified nursing assistant jobs are expected to expand as the Baby Boomer aging population grows.

CNA Salaries

Certified nursing assistant salary are the fastest growing and can earn at entry level between $20,000 and $30,00 a year. It basically boils down to where you work as each industry have different requirements and different pay levels and how much experience you have had in the past.

There are many tests to take before you become a certified nursing assistant and then at the end of the training sessions, there will be a final assessment test. Then, you will be given your certification and begin work as a CNA.

First let’s define what a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is. A CNA is trained to assist patients with activities of daily living, such as dressing, bathing and personal hygiene. Nursing Assistance work under fully qualified nurses such as Licensed Practical Nurses or Registered Nurses. CNA’s are usually employed by nursing or retirement homes.

The work required by a CNA is not for the weak stomach. It takes a very special and caring person to accept this physically and emotionally draining work. Many licensed nurses start out their career as a CNA. If you are thinking about a career in the medical field, working as a CNA is a great way to discover if this is the type of work
best suited for you.

In order to become a CNA, you must be certified by a program approved by the National League for Nursing Accredited Commission. There are a lot of great training programs out there for certification. Some colleges offer a certification course for CNA’s. The benefits for these courses are shorter and less stressful courses than nursing students are required to take. Usually these students are involved in hands-on training at a medical facility in order to gain the experience needed to preform there duties once certified. However, these programs cost money just as any college course would. This can be a burden on some who are looking for this type of training.

Many medical facilities, such as nursing homes, also offer a certification course due to the high demand for qualified CNA’s. Some of these facilities ask for the newly Certified Nursing Assistant to sign a contract stating they will stay employed with the facility for a set amount of time, after completion of the program. In exchange for signing the contract, the facility does not charge them for their training. The benefits to this method of certification, is there is no need to travel from classroom to the facility for training, and there are no out-of-pocket expense to you. The only draw back is you could possible find yourself locked into a contract at a facility you don’t want to work for.

After completing the necessary courses, you are then required to pass an exam in order to complete your certification. There is a written and a practical portion to the exam. The written portion is given as a multiple choice test with 2-3 essay or critical thinking questions. The practical portion of the test is where your hands-on experience pays off. You will be asked to preform a number of procedures such as a blood pressure check, taking a patients temperature, correct hand washing procedures and turning a patient correctly. This is the most stressful portion of the test because you are under the watchful eye of an instructor or nurse.

Once you have passed the certification exam, you will then receive your certification card. You will have to be re-certified every two years.

Working as a CNA is a very rewarding profession that allow you to discover your caring and nurturing side, and could possibly lead to a career in nursing.

A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is a vocation of the heart and requires a person be committed to the health and safety of their patients. Most duties of a CNA are likely to assist in the completion of various tasks, freeing nurses to focus on more extensive healthcare responsibilities. It is imperative that a CNA be devoted to helping others and has an attitude that no assignment is insurmountable. The CNA must treat their patients with respect and maintain their dignity as much as possible, after all the CNA is there to help their patients do those things they can not do for themselves. A qualified Certified Nursing Assistant can find employment in hospitals, nursing homes or assisted living facilities and in private home health care settings.

For a person looking to break into the health care field the American Red Cross CNA training is a great place to start. It is available in many states though the course hours may vary based on specific state requirements. The Red Cross course is a highly acclaimed, fast paced and comprehensive curriculum and may be completed in as little as two months. The participant is expected to successfully complete both classroom and hands on skill activities.

The following is a list of the minimum requirements for an American Red Cross CNA student:

· Be at least 18 years of age or older
· Have no felony convictions in the past 7 years
· Be free of any communicable diseases
· Pass a TB screening
· Not be currently pregnant

The American Red Cross course will entail classroom instruction, laboratory practice, and actual supervised experience with patients in a hospital or nursing home setting. Classrooms are set-up with all the necessary equipment to do the job such as hospital beds, practice mannequins, bed pans, wheelchairs and most likely a real Hoyer lift. Students learn how to move patients from bed to wheelchair and back again, how to take a patient’s vital signs and provide assistance with feeding, bathing, grooming, dental care and so forth.

Applicants are required to pass a two-part exam upon completion of the training course. The entire process takes about 5 ½ hours. A skill assessment must be passed first before taking the written portion of the exam. Participants are notified of their test results the same day and will receive their state CNA certification a short time afterward.

The path to becoming an American Red Cross certified CNA is strenuous but in the end rewarding. To help another person with the simple tasks of day to day life and know that you are providing a real and vital service to them, makes the hardwork more than worth it.

Finding CNA training classes in order to become a Certified Nurses Assistant or nurse’s aid is sometimes as easy as checking to see if the local two-year community college or nursing school offers CNA training classes. CNA training classes are also offered by select skilled nursing facilities and long-term nursing facilities. Most CNA training classes last about six weeks and cover such topics as basic hygiene, CPR, assisting patients with daily living activities, proper feeding techniques and patient safety.

There are some very basic requirements for enrolling in CNA training classes, but these do not include a high school diploma or GED usually required by other medical training programs. Prospective CNA students must demonstrate basic math and English skills and most training classes require the student be at least 18 years of age. Good health and physical stamina is also required to successfully complete CNA training classes because standing, lifting and bending are required by the duties of the job when dealing with patients.

CNA training classes will vary depending upon the state in which the student is taking coursework. Some CNA training classes require more hours of clinical and theory coursework than others. CNA training classes are offered by some institutions at night or on weekends to accommodate individuals shifting careers who may only be able to take the training on a part time basis.

No matter whether the student takes a two-year college CNA training class or a class offered by a long-term nursing facility, all certified nurse aids must pass a competency test leading to a Certified Nurse Assistant Certification. CNA Certification requires 75 hours of training at the minimum, along with successfully passing a state exam offered by the state in which the CNA will be practicing.

Some nursing homes and skilled care nursing facilities that offer CNA training classes enable students to enroll in their classes without paying tuition in exchange for agreeing to work at that facility for a set amount of time following graduation and obtaining the CNA Certification. This enables prospective nurses aid candidates who may not be able to afford schooling to learn to become a CNA and have the added benefit of full-time employment immediately following receipt of their CNA Certification.
